Since leaving my career in public health to be home with my children, I’ve had this major shift in perception of productivity. At first, it really made me anxious. I wasn’t crossing things off my daily to-dos as I used to while sitting at my desk and I certainly wasn’t getting ALL of the things done around the house while I was home with my little ones either. The shift came when I realized the productivity is just measured on a completely different scale – by the amount of cuddles given, lessons taught, imagination encouraged, tears wiped, diaper blowouts avoided (or cleaned up) and laughs + giggles heard.
And, as for me? I did manage to find a few ways to still sneak in some of that other productivity I crave, because after all, mamas are multitaskers. I have to note, much of this is thanks to my Baby K’tan Baby Carrier these days – my favorite, but if you already know me you already likely know that, too. Thanks to my Baby K’tan Baby Carrier, I’m able to comfortably wear Rush and have two free hands + the freedom to accomplish {insert any task here}. I’m lucky he likes to be worn close + so lucky to be a Baby K’tan ambassador sharing these truths with you mamas about our multitasking abilities.
The Truth About Multitasking Moms
Truth: We eat and we drop crumbs.
Truth: We manage to clean up some of those crumbs sometimes and may count it as a workout.
Truth: Multitasking while cooking can often look like arms stirring, headphones on for a hands-free phone call, quick breaks to play hide and seek with kiddos + wiping down counters and appliances for a quick clean.
Truth: Moms allow their go-go-gadet arms to provide every child, every thing while in the kitchen, without sacrificing the productivity of her own hands.
Truth: We moms talk, listen, play, think, make lists — all at the same time and somehow it all makes sense.
Truth: We answer emails and check messages while building with legos and playing tea party.
Truth: We are really good at doing it all, but sometimes it doesn’t feel really good. We can laugh about dropping crumbs on our babies heads while eating because that’s certainly the reality. We can juggle carrying two (or more) kids up and down the stairs because everyone needs mom, right?! But, we honestly know that though multitasking can be SO good and SO necessary at times, it’s also a skill to be used in balance.
The truth about multitasking moms is that we can do SO much, SO much of the time, but we also know when to slow down. We know when to not answer that email and check those messages just so we can sit and play. We know when to not use our hands to cook and clean, when our children just need us in those evening hours of the day, and to order takeout instead.
The truth about multitasking moms is that we know the limits. We playfully marry tasks together while baby wearing, baby holding, toddler entertaining, preschooler incorporating, and running older children around; AND yet, we can simplify.
We, multitasking moms, can live one task at a time when that is what’s best.
And we can laugh when we have do it ALL at once, because in some crazy way, we can make it all happen… and sometimes it’s quite a funny sight.

Wow, Lisa! That first part about changing our prospective on productivity really spoke to my heart!! I left my job a year ago after baby number three (in four yrs!) was born and most days altho I do so much I still feel incredibly unproductive bc my to do list has almost nothing checked off at the end of the day!! But I like the way you put it! Productuvity just means something different now. Going to remember that whenever I’m feeing down about my constantly growing to do list and three littles at my feet needing something, anything asap!

Yes, yes, yes! Exactly what I experienced. I’m so glad it resonated with you. It was definitely a shift in mindset, but those three littles of yours, they are your productive. And it’s the best (+ least check off a list) kind. Sending you love, mama! XO
